December 21, 2014 – Orange Beach, AL (OBA) – The Iowa-Alabama Snowbirds welcome any Iowans or their guests to the snowbird breakfasts and activities.  Steve and Chris Hedlund, Co-presidents, have announced breakfasts will be the second and fourth Wednesday mornings at 8:30 a.m. Jan. 14 and 28 and Feb. 11 and 25.

National Bank of Commerce buys land in Gulf Shores for new office

The National Bank of Commerce paid $550,000 for almost an acre at West 2nd Street and West Commerce Drive in Gulf Shores and will begin construction soon on a new office, according to Leonard Kaiser of Kaiser Real Estate Sales. He sold the property and has 3.6 acres remaining in the parcel which is behind Kaiser’s office off Ala. 59. Several restaurants and office users are interested in locating at the site, he said.

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) – Baldwin County law enforcement officers had a moment of silence and prayer tonight after the killings of two New York City Police Officers. Authorities said on Sat. Dec. 20, Ismaaiyl Brinsley ambushed Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu in a patrol car and shot them to death before running to a nearby Brooklyn subway station and killing himself.

To borrow from an old song from the holidays that I was forced to endure for six years as a snaggle-toothed youngster, “All I want for Christmas are my two red snapper.” It’s obviously not going to happen in a couple of weeks, but there is hope the situation will look much better in the near future.

Rotarians raise money for Honduran schoolchildren’s lunches

December 20, 2014 — Orange Beach, AL (OBA) — The active Rotarian program called “Lunches for Learning” is raising money for school lunches for the children of Honduras. The proceeds along with requested donations are to be totaled and an anonymous donor agreed to contribute a like amount for the funding of the children of the rural Honduras schools.

FOLEY, Alabama — A Foley couple faces capital murder charges following a brazen home burglary and arson, and shooting death of a 70-year-old man who police say was a friend of one of the assailants. Brandon Michael Bledsoe, 33, and Heather Elizabeth Raftery, 21, both of Foley, were arrested by Foley police on Thursday and charged with capital murder-arson and capital murder-burglary following the death of 70-year-old Tommy Burdette on Sunday night.

SPANISH FORT, Ala. – The Spanish Fort City Council met briefly Monday evening to welcome a new member and pass a pair of resolutions. Before starting on new business, the council welcomed William “Bill” Anthony Menas to the board following his swearing in by Baldwin County Probate Judge and former mayor of Foley Tim Russell. Menas was selected by the council to step in to the vacancy left by former councilman Dennis Dismukes, whose job forced him to relocate.
