Turtle nesting climbs along area coastline | Pensacola News Journal | pnj.com

Friday, July 29th, 2011

Sea turtle nesting season is on a record-breaking pace.

That’s the word from Gulf Islands National Seashore officials who had been concerned there might be a decrease in nests in the wake the BP oil spill last year.

The 68 nests counted this year on Santa Rosa Island and Perdido Key top the previous record of 58 nests in 2000, said Andrew Diller, marine biologist with Sea Grant of Escambia County. The recording of sea turtle nests on weekly basis goes back to 1991.

Pensacola Bay Area Official Blog: Perdido Key Welcomes an Abundance of Summer Visitors

Sunday, July 10th, 2011

On my second day of our summer visitors' survey, I stopped at Perdido Key. By my first couple steps onto Johnson Beach, I could tell it was going to be a very busy day on the Key. The smell of sunscreen and salty breeze from the Gulf filled the air. Bright, colorful tents and umbrellas lined the coast, shading the visitors who were preparing for a fun-filled day on the beach.

Lawsuit over Perdido Key fire station settled out of court | Pensacola News Journal | pnj.com

Monday, June 6th, 2011

The complaints of a Perdido Key couple about a proposed Perdido Key fire station and community center will cost the county an additional $98,985.

Escambia County has settled out of court with husband and wife Douglas and Sherry Wager, who objected last year to the placement and design of the $5 million project, saying it would block their view of the water and cause excessive traffic on their street.

County commissioners on Thursday approved a change order that will add $98,985 to the project’s architectural and engineering services contract to pay for the changes agreed to in the legal settlement with the Wagers.
