GULF SHORES — Dan Bond, recently hired by the City of Gulf Shores as an environmental grants coordinator, has been busy getting a new amenity for the city’s Alabama 59 sidewalk project. Gulf Shores has received numerous matching grants from the state and other agencies in the past few years to upgrade sidewalks and walking paths around town. One of those includes improvements and additions to those along Alabama 59 from the beach to County Road 4.
GULF SHORES, AL — Artist Marion Hawks will be teaching a class called “Experimenting with Acrylics” at the Gulf Coast Arts Alliance gallery this fall. Hawks Hawks grew up in Alabama with little formal instruction in art but she was surrounded with creativity!
FAIRHOPE, Ala. — Fairhope Police arrested two men on charges of possession of two stolen firearms and marijuana on Tuesday. On Tuesday at approximately 12:40 p.m., the Fairhope Police Department responded to a report of an alleged theft 198 Autumn Drive, Lot 16.
The Kinta S, which once plied the Caribbean, was salvaged in Miami in June and towed to Orange Beach, Ala. where the Walter Marine Co. readied the ship for its voyage to Texas.
It has been 10 years since Hurricane Ivan roared ashore in Baldwin County, Alabama, changing the lives of Alabamians and causing devastation throughout the state and the Gulf Coast region. Ivan was the worst storm to hit Alabama in 25 years and is in the record books as the seventh most costly hurricane ever to affect the United States.
The Shrimp Basket on Navy Boulevard, previously the site of the long-standing Oyster Bar, will serve its last plate of seafood Sunday. Then, restaurant officials will shut it down, strip it, bulldoze it and rebuild it from scratch. The Shrimp Basket, which opened on Navy Boulevard in 2007 after the closure of the Oyster Bar, will reopen, tentatively, in December.
FOLEY, Ala. — Approximately 70 Foley High students gathered in the school’s library Wednesday afternoon to take part in a video chat with U.S. Congressman Bradley Byrne. Byrne hosted the 30-minute session for advanced-placement students at FHS, as well as AP students at Baldwin County Baker, Davidson, JU Blacksher and Saraland high schools.
FOLEY, Ala. — Just over a month after officials at South Baldwin Chamber of Commerce announced plans to stop hosting the Gulf Coast Hot Air Balloon Festival, they reversed that decision.
MOBILE, Ala. – Repairs to the US 90/98 I-10 on-ramp that was damaged in a tanker truck fire are scheduled to get underway Monday, September 22. That fiery wreck on July 30th was so hot it melted the raised roadway deck and steel guardrails, closing the ramp to traffic since then.

FAIRHOPE, Alabama — The Eastern Shore Twirlers recently participated in America’s Youth on Parade, the annual national competition for the National Baton Twirling Association. The competition was held at the University of Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind. Team members shone in both individual and team competitions.
GULF SHORES, Alabama – The fifth annual SloPoker Run, to benefit The Children’s Miracle Network and Children’s and Women’s Hospital of South Alabama, will take place on the waterways of Gulf Shores and Orange Beach. The run will be held Oct. 4.
MOBILE, Alabama – A judge on Thursday granted a request by a lawyer to order his former client, retired pro football player Kenny Stabler’s ex-wife, to pay more than $200,000 in damages for harming his reputation with a legal malpractice suit. Mobile County Circuit Judge Sarah Stewart already had ruled in favor of lawyer Jeff Deen on a counter-suit he filed against Rose Burch Stabler.
National Naval Aviation Museum Foundation will present an anniversary gala honoring the museum’s 50th and Pensacola Naval Air Station’s 100th anniversaries Saturday at the Aviation Museum. The gala will include live music, cocktails, dinner and dancing in celebration of these milestones.
BAY MINETTE, Alabama - Two men robbed a clerk at the Dollar General on Highway 59 on the side side of Bay Minette Tuesday night just before closing. The suspects are still on the run.

The public will have another opportunity to voice its opinion concerning the future of The Hangout Music Festival at Gulf Shores Pubic Beach during a public hearing on Sept. 22 at 4 p.m. at City Council Chambers at Gulf Shores City Hall.
IN THE GULF OF MEXICO – The Walter Marine crew aboard the tug Maranatha endured some tense moments with equipment malfunctions, but still managed to get the Kinta retired cargo ship to the bottom where she was intended to go.
MOBILE, Alabama – The Alabama Coastal Cleanup, which began 27 years ago with a few hundred volunteers cleaning up the beaches of Dauphin Island and Gulf State Park, has grown into the state’s largest volunteer event, according to Phillip Hinesley, Coastal Section Chief of the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Lifetime hunting and fishing licenses, Yamaha generators and gift cards to Alabama State Parks are the prizes to be awarded in the Outdoor Alabama Sweepstakes, which runs through February 10, 2015. “Whatever the people of Orange Beach decide to do, we’re going to work hand in hand with them,” said Owen, who has met with Orange Beach Mayor Tony Kennon and “had a good conversation.” If the vote leads to a new school system, Baldwin County officials “want to make sure that the transition is smooth,” Owen said, adding that he wants all Baldwin County residents to be pleased with the quality of their educational systems.

I just want to let the residents of Orange Beach know that most of the myths being said about the schools in Gulf Shores are just that, myths. I lived through the transition of going from Orange Beach Elementary to the middle school and high school in Gulf Shores, and am proud to be called a Gulf Shores Dolphin.
DESTIN — Construction is expected to begin soon on the new LuLu’s Destin, a second location for Lucy Buffett’s popular Gulf Shores, Ala., restaurant and entertainment center. Site clearing and elevation work for LuLu’s Destin is under way on a parcel next to Legendary Marine on Danny Weurfell Way.
The Fourth Annual 2 Angels Amongst Us Golf Tournament will be held on Thursday, October 16 at a Gulf Shores Golf Club on Clubhouse Drive in Gulf Shores. The tourney begins with a shotgun starat at 1 p.m. And lunch and dinner are included with registration. September 17, 2014 – Orange Beach, AL (OBA) -The Orange Beach Police Department began conducted a seven-month investigation into the sale of Cocaine and Marijuana. Early into the investigation, Salvador Cortez became the main focus as a go to dealer in the area. On Sept.16 members of the Orange Beach Police Department arrested Salvador Cortez a 27-year-old Hispanic Male.
ORANGE BEACH, AL — For the second year in a row the city’s Wind and Water Learning Center will be a boating site for the 27th annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup. This year’s event is from 8 a.m.-noon and the site behind the Orange Beach Public Library is one of several Orange Beach and Gulf Shores residents can show up to pick up trash along the coast line.
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – Stewart Walter of Walter Marine has learned to be prepared for just about anything. Walter and crew are in Corpus Christi after pushing the Kinta from Orange Beach where it will become a fishing-diving reef for the Texas Artificial Reef Program. Scheduled deployment is Wednesday, Sept. 17, about eight miles off the Texas coast in about 75 feet of water.
ORANGE BEACH, Ala. (WPMI) Next week residents in Orange Beach will decide if they want to separate from the Baldwin County School System. Both the support and the opposition groups are trying to get their message out ahead of next week’s vote. As time is ticking down, things are heating up.
GULF SHORES, Alabama - Gulf State Park was devastated when Hurricane Ivan made landfall in Gulf Shores ten years ago. Campgrounds were submerged, roads flooded, forests were damaged and cabins were destroyed. But the storm’s biggest impact was at the fishing pier and at the state park lodge. Both structures were leveled.
