ORANGE BEACH, Alabama — When Birmingham native John Joseph “Joe” Grimes retired to Orange Beach, his community involvement would later earn him recognition for dedication and leadership and even a key to the city, which he helped incorporate in 1984. While the impact of his service was felt by the Orange Beach community as a whole, perhaps even more impressionable was the touch he left on a multitude of individual lives throughout his lifetime.
The National Bank of Commerce paid $550,000 for almost an acre at West 2nd Street and West Commerce Drive in Gulf Shores and will begin construction soon on a new office, according to Leonard Kaiser of Kaiser Real Estate Sales. He sold the property and has 3.6 acres remaining in the parcel which is behind Kaiser’s office off Ala. 59. Several restaurants and office users are interested in locating at the site, he said.
“It’s like the old famous description that it’s a bridge to nowhere if you can get to the bridge to Daphne only to stop (in a traffic jam), then you don’t accomplish what you can accomplish,” Mike Lee, chairman of the “Build the I-10 Bridge” Coalition with the Mobile Area Chamber of Commerce said.

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) – Baldwin County law enforcement officers had a moment of silence and prayer tonight after the killings of two New York City Police Officers. Authorities said on Sat. Dec. 20, Ismaaiyl Brinsley ambushed Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu in a patrol car and shot them to death before running to a nearby Brooklyn subway station and killing himself.

GULF SHORES, AL – Santa gave Pleausre Island one last chance to give him their Christmas wishes at the city’s annual Breakfast With Santa Dec. 21 at the Erie Meyer Civic Center in Gulf Shores. A hearty breakfast, a visit with the old elf and a bicycle raffle for a boy’s and girl’s bike highlighted the morning.
To borrow from an old song from the holidays that I was forced to endure for six years as a snaggle-toothed youngster, “All I want for Christmas are my two red snapper.” It’s obviously not going to happen in a couple of weeks, but there is hope the situation will look much better in the near future.
December 20, 2014 — Orange Beach, AL (OBA) — The active Rotarian program called “Lunches for Learning” is raising money for school lunches for the children of Honduras. The proceeds along with requested donations are to be totaled and an anonymous donor agreed to contribute a like amount for the funding of the children of the rural Honduras schools.

MONTGOMERY – Governor Robert Bentley on Friday announced that Alabama’s preliminary, seasonally adjusted November unemployment rate is 6.0%, lowest in the state in more than six years. The statewide unemployment rate was down from October’s rate of 6.3%, and below the October 2013 rate of 6.2%.

It will be the kindness her neighbors and friends showed in John’s last hours. It’s been a year of illness for John from being on dialysis since the spring to a massive stroke that ultimately claimed his life.
ORANGE BEACH — Chris Sherrill, executive chef at the Flora-Bama Yacht Club and long time friend of John Brunick, is leading an effort to have a reef in the Gulf dedicated to his friend. The first four structures in Poseidon’s Playground, a new dive attraction about three miles off Orange Beach, were deployed on Dec. 17.

FOLEY, Alabama — A Foley couple faces capital murder charges following a brazen home burglary and arson, and shooting death of a 70-year-old man who police say was a friend of one of the assailants. Brandon Michael Bledsoe, 33, and Heather Elizabeth Raftery, 21, both of Foley, were arrested by Foley police on Thursday and charged with capital murder-arson and capital murder-burglary following the death of 70-year-old Tommy Burdette on Sunday night.

FOLEY, Ala. — Foley Police have announced an arrest for Capital Murder in connection with an elderly man’s death discovered in the aftermath of a fire at his Foley home Sunday. Foley Police Chief David Wilson announced an arrest in the Murder/Arson case that occurred at 105 Monteith Circle in Foley on the evening of December 14, 2014.
