ROBERTSDALE, Ala. – No one was hurt as firefighters from six area volunteer fire departments battled a house fire for nearly two hours on Wednesday. Robertsdale Fire Chief Michael Lucas said he received the call at around 12:47 p.m. at the home located east of the Baldwin Beach Express off of County Road 48 South in Robertsdale’s fire jurisdiction.

Don’t Forget! Tax-free Holiday This Weekend

Montgomery, Ala – Alabama Revenue Commissioner Julie P. Magee reminds shoppers that beginning this Friday, August 1, through Sunday, August 3, many necessary school items will be exempt from the state’s four percent sales tax. If the shoppers’ cities and counties are participating this year, local sales taxes will also be exempt on the designated items.

MOBILE, Alabama – The 150th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Mobile Bay postage stamp was dedicated during a ceremony at the History Museum of Mobile Wednesday morning. There was standing room only as the ceremony, led by Postmaster of Mobile Reginald Capers, began with the posting of the colors by the U.S. Coast Guard ATC Mobile Color Guard.

Hammerhead shark sightings spark fear, excitement in Florida beachgoers | AL.com

There’s nothing like a shark sighting to create a little excitement and/or panic for swimmers in the Gulf of Mexico. Two hammerhead sharks were reported along the Florida Panhandle Tuesday, with one occurring next to the Navarre Beach fishing pier and one near Destin’s East Pass. Each got wildly different reactions from the people who were around to witness them.

FORT MORGAN, AL — Fort Morgan will commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Mobile Bay this weekend Aug. 1-3 with a reenactment of the Siege of Fort Morgan that is sure to blow visitors out of the water. The event begins on Friday night with artillery firing to signal the beginning of the Siege, and will continue on Saturday with the reenactment of the largest naval battle of the Civil War, which will culminate in the Grand Bombardment that evening.

Florida officials frustrated with release of Deepwater Horizon oil spill funds

WASHINGTON – The Obama administration isn’t moving fast enough to release hundreds of millions of dollars slated to help the Gulf Coast recover from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, Florida officials said Thursday. Congress passed the bipartisan RESTORE Act in 2012, creating a way to distribute billions in civil fines levied against BP and other companies involved in the spill, which befouled coastal beaches, ravaged marine ecosystems and damaged the tourist trade.

(WALA) – “All of a sudden your mind kind of flashes and you’re thinking, ‘Am I going to live through this, too?’ And by then it was all over.” Those were the thoughts running through BRATS bus driver, Raymond Mayo’s head a split second before an SUV slammed into him. The crash killed the driver of the SUV, 35-year-old Shawn Wiggins and injuried all 12 people on the bus.
